Can a somber memory become joyful upon reflection?
The trees were there
but not in the way.
The view had its own
crescendo as it galloped
towards the purple night swell
and the stolid oaks
funneled a glazed eye
to the eventual.
My moon and summer
night air mingling
facing a long gone memory
and laughing.

Sure. You lived and learned. And even if a somber memory I’m sure there are more with other people there or people who you no longer see that you remember fondly.

There’s an old cliche: “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

I don’t believe it, but I believe you.

It’s a wonderful gift to be able to translate old memories into a positive feeling.

  3. Sin

Yeah. It’s funny how time and perspective can do that. What was once earth-shattering becomes an amusing page in our past. It helps to be able to laugh at ones own self.

    yes it can

My Dad was supposed to come visit me when the house we ar building was finished…it will be done in a week…Dad won’t be able to come though. I know I will walk around the house and wonder if he would be proud.
Moments can…maybe not the whole thing…but special moments…yes!

I kept notebooks at my parents bedside when they were each ill and wrote in them daily so that other family members could read the day to day things that happened. The books each ended when they passed, but reading them now, I read all the silly, funny things we did to help us cope with the sadness and I feel all that love over and over again. So to answer your question….YES it can!

Yes, even in death, we celebrate a person’s life and know that he or she is now in a better place.

Obviously, in this beautiful poem you found a way to make it so.
But I have been thinking of my “somber memories” as per your Q, and have come up with none that I can now reflect upon in a joyful manner.

If it was somber then, it remains somber today, however there are after affects of that memory in hindsight that I can perhaps laugh about, but not the specific thing itself.

    Hi Mag,

This is good. This is very good — wonderful imagery and delicious irony. But it needs a good edit — may I?

You need an evocative adjective before the word “crescendo.” Either that, or change the word to “epiphany.”

“Toward” rather than “towards,” and drop “swell” completely.

AND the stolid oaks — how about, “as the stolid oaks”

About your use of the word “eventual,” you can handle it two ways — either an evocative noun after the word (like “culmination”), or, an adjective before it, thus using “eventual” as a noun.

In your last sentence, drop, “My,” and “summer” and add “sultry” before “night air.” And consider changing “long gone” to “long lost”.

As I was reading your poem, one word turned over in my mind summarizing it’s meaning for me — “Click.” You might want to consider revisiting the title.

Excellent effort. Hope this helps. Cheers, mate.

hmmm… Yes they can to answer the question.

And if I may note…now that is constructive criticism. Starts off with a positive then makes suggestions for improvement. Now of course, it is the writer’s choice to take them or not depending on the writer’s intent/goal. The only aspect Jack did not do was finish on a strong positive, though it was a positive.
THIS is the kind of ‘feedback’ I would hope for, not the rude stuff I have been seeing. Sigh.
I continue to learn from you, sir.. and that is a good thing.

    In some ways it can…

The trees are not in the way,but us men cut and tear them down, anyways! Just to see if the view is more eventful to the ignorant eyes of the lumberjack!! All of my long gone memories are long gone, with the trees!! Somber, perhaps!! Reflection poor!

My best memories involve trees as part of views.I like to laugh at myself in retrospect,as in ; “What was I thinking?”.

    I have a memory to.
Of a wonderful place I used to come to before and have such fun.
Then the lights went down low
    and chased it away.
It tries to rear it’s head every now and again
but it’s like those thumpers that invade your space
    here now
    then vanished without a trace
    I tried. ?
