Album Description
Imagine a party, a musical party inspired by the holiday season. A party that celebrates the universal hopes, dreams and joy animating seasonal festivals the world over – Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Kwanzaa, Yule and New Year’s Day. That is what brought Yo-Yo Ma together with a remarkable group of friends – some old, some new – to create SONGS OF JOY & PEACE. It is Yo-Yo’s hope that everyone who listens to this album will hear a song familiar, comfortable and beloved to them as well as discover and fall in love with music that is brand new.

I don’t own this particular CD, but I bought the Silk Road project of Yo Yo Ma and was thoroughly disappointed. I get the feeling that there is a deliberate attempt to fill the reviews with five stars, so gullible people like me fall for it once in a while. But unfortunately there is no easy way to buy a CD.

This is one of the most boring CDs I ever listened to! Sounds like long, drawn out practice sessions. Endless thrills and shrills of scales and Ya-da-yahing! Probably very exciting in the music classroom. Maybe it’s an experiment in how great advertising can sell anything!
Sorry..me.. no ..likey..

This Yo Yo Ma album is awful and a bad idea. He can play cello and we all know that. So just stick to the basics and play cello! It’s way too long. He needs to make his songs short and interesting. How much can he do with a cello anyway? He could play cello in a regular band with a singer. Piano, violin and cello is a good combination. It’s less boring.Cello for Relaxation

do you recall the sesame street song, “which of these things are not like the other?”
well, james taylor’s “here comes the sun’ fits that category.
plus, he’s off key.
i suppose since this is not really a “christmas” cd, God forbid, then a beatles tune fits.
i kept waiting for “imagine” or “happy xmas (war is over)” – oh wait — he covers happy xmas – now i feel tingly.
a post-mortem lennon appearance would’ve been PERFECT.
it all just seemed a bit pretentious to me. It’s NOT a Christmas cd — songs of “joy and peace.”
whatever.
even on yo yo’s website — it’s all accolades like this music is going to somehow change the world — if we all could just get the message and get along.
i also thought it was boring — just kind of the same pacing throughout.
i think i heard something similar in an elevator today.
anyway, i bought it — and was not impressed.

I can’t be one of the many reviewers giving this CD raves; anyone who does must have given the Emperor’s new clothes 5-star reviews as well.
This album stinks.
With a holiday introduction, a title like “Songs of Joy & Peace”, and Yo-Yo Ma as the featured artist, I expected a fabulous Christmas album. Hardly. The song selection and performance is poor to put it kindly. It is as if the producer said, “Hey, I bet we could make a lot of money if we slapped Yo-Yo Ma’s name on the cover of holiday CD. But, just for kicks, why don’t we pick the most random selection of unrelated songs and perform them in the most off-the-wall manner we can come up with. Cuz everyone knows you can’t return CD’s!”
Well, I was one of the suckers fell for it; I didn’t even bother reading the back jacket. Meanwhile, Steven Epstein is laughing all the way to the bank.
Though there are a couple of decent songs here, there are also a couple which are so bad you have to skip them to keep from running screaming from the room. Honestly, this CD is a waste of money. Even my grown kids couldn’t believe how bad it was; and they generally love holiday music.
Save your money. We’re going back to our Windham Hill Winter Solstice collection.
